The Indiana Business Enterprise Program (BEP), in conjunction with Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VR), has announced that they are recruiting interested candidates for 2016 BEP training class. As part of the Randolph-Sheppard Act, BEP provides individuals who are blind or visually impaired with access to rewarding and profitable entrepreneurial ventures broadening their economic opportunities.
First Lady Karen Pence hosted the sixth award reception for grant recipients of the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation at the Governor’s Residence on February 23, where she awarded $32,000 to 36 organizations and charities that serve Hoosier families and children across the state. INARF member Janus Developmental Services was among the organizations selected for the grant.
Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services Commission (IPAS) and The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana (ACLU of Indiana) have filed a class action lawsuit against the State of Indiana, the Indiana Secretary of State, the Clerk of Jefferson County, and members of the Indiana Election Commission. The complaint alleges that an Indiana state law is unconstitutional as it imposes an undue burden on people with mental illness who reside in institutions in exercising their right to vote and discriminates against those with mental illness in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Offers Tax Filing Assistance to People with Disabilities3/2/2016
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is still offering free assistance with filing taxes for people with disabilities, seniors, and others who need special help. VITA volunteers are certified and trained by the Internal Revenue Service and can help you prepare a basic return.
This spring, the National Park Service is offering free access to federal recreation sites to individuals with disabilities. In order to gain free access, individuals must present some documentation of disability status and ask for the free Access Pass. Documentation includes a physician's statement, or a document issued by a State or Federal agency like the Veteran's Administration, Social Security Disability Income, Supplemental Security Income, or a vocational rehabilitation agency. The pass gives the individual plus three adults free admission to federal recreation sites around the country, and it is good for life!
